Plenty of films compare themselves to the X-Men’s legacy, but few really nail its specific tone and altruistic focus on bringing outcasts together. The X-Men comics, especially Chris Claremont’s The Uncanny X-Men run, were always about marginalized and misunderstood individuals finding each other and building a found family. Together, they’d better understand their powers and themselves. To its credit, The Innocents shows us a cinematic version of this design and does so with a compelling cast of children and an incredible amount of heart.

Written and directed by Eskil Vogt, The Innocents follows a group of children — Ida (Rakel Lenora Fløttum), Ben (Sam Ashraf), Anna (Alva Brynsmo Ramstad), and Aisha (Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim) — who become summertime friends and soon discover that when they’re together they have strange and unexplainable capabilities. Of course, none of these children tell their parents what these dark powers can do, which spells trouble for all involved.

RELATED: Barbarians Compellingly Tackles Toxic Masculinity But Misses Its Landing

The best way to describe Vogt’s pacing in The Innocents is methodical. The feature film is definitely a slow-burn. Vogt’s shots are focused on tiny but important details. Look away for one moment and you just might miss another clue into these children’s surfacing powers. Or you might miss a knowing glance between sisters that changes everything. Truth be told, you won’t want to look away from the screen as its quiet atmosphere evokes the feeling of whispers between friends and memories of childhood summer days that feel like they’ll never end. There’s a compelling mix of joy and fear in watching these children wander around and test what else their powers can or can’t do — before they dare to ask if they should.

But wrapped up in all of this nostalgia is something much darker. Like The Uncanny X-Menthese children learn that powers can go awry. Without a strong support system and a Xavier-like figure helming their capabilities, the children are confused and act out as impulsively as kids can when there’s something not easy to understand that challenges them. Vogt’s writing carefully lays out small (but vital) moments of mistrust amongst friends that ultimately culminate into a tragic and harrowing story. No one should have to make the choices that these kids make and we feel that truth deep in our hearts long after the credits roll.

While all the children actors perform admirably, Mina Yasmin Bremseth Asheim’s Aisha steals the show. Although this review won’t spoil what powers these children have, it’s fair to say that Aisha’s empathy abilities ground what could have been a meandering story. Aisha reminds us that every act we have does have consequences and becomes the soul of the film.

The Innocents‘ plot is simple, choosing to focus on character-based moments than necessarily a larger-arching storyline. For viewers who are looking for show-stopping action, this won’t scratch that itch. But for viewers who prefer to see complex character studies unfold, this is a winning bet. At a time when there are many superhero stories being told, it’s refreshing to see one that challenges power fantasies by showing just how complicated it can get when you play with superpowers. The Innocents puts some realism back into the world of powered individuals, reminding viewers that these kinds of tests and playing with boundaries often end in someone getting hurt. On a larger scale, it reminds viewers how unexplainable everything feels when you’re young and how important it is to have a core group of friends to rely on to get through that time. Overall, The Innocents is a charming and heartwrenching film.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK (May 18, 2022) ? IFC Films announced today that they will reunite with director Michael Tyburski (The Sound of Silence) for his sophomore feature, sci-fi comedy TURN ME ON, starring Bel Powley (The King of Staten Island, The Diary of a Teenage Girl, The Morning Show) and Nick Robinson (Love, Simon, Maid, A Teacher). The screenplay is written by Angela Bourassa (2020 Black List writer, If You Were The Last), and the film is produced by Zareh Nalbandian, Toby Nalbandian, and Gregory Schmidt of Truant Pictures, the live-action specialty division of Animal Logic Studios, along with producer Sean Bradley (Paddleton). TURN ME ON is executive produced by Fabien Westerhoff and Bourassa. Shooting will begin in November 2022 and IFC Films will release it in theaters during the Summer of 2023. The film will later stream exclusively on AMC+.

In TURN ME ON, the inconvenience of human emotion has been eradicated by a government-imposed daily vitamin. A young couple (Powley and Robinson) skip their dose to discover love, joy and sex for the first time, but they quickly come to realize they must also handle the emotional baggage that comes with it.

Arianna Bocco, President of IFC Films, said, ?Michael is a major talent. He has proven himself to be a gifted director with an original perspective both on the page and on the big screen. TURN ME ON is a great next step for him and we are thrilled he has come home to IFC Films for his next feature.?

Director Michael Tyburski added, ?I?m so thrilled to be making this film and to also be bringing it to the big screen with the teams at Film Constellation and IFC Films?both whom I?ve come to trust dearly and I know will truly provide the perfect homes for this story.?

IFC Films and Tyburski previously teamed up for the release of his inventive 2019 feature film debut The Sound of Silence, starring Peter Sarsgaard and Rashida Jones, which he co-wrote with Ben Nabors. The Sound of Silence had its world premiere at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival and was based on Tyburski?s award-winning short Palimpsest, which debuted at Sundance in 2013.

The deal for the film was negotiated by SVP of Acquisitions and Productions for IFC Films, Scott Shooman with UTA independent film group, CAA Media Finance and Fabien Westerhoff of Film Constellation on behalf of the filmmakers.

Synopsis: On the other side of the door, was time in its entirety?

Suzume no Tojimari is a coming-of-age story for the 17-year-old protagonist, Suzume, set in various disaster-stricken locations across Japan, where she must close the doors causing devastation.

Suzume?s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu (located in southwestern Japan) when she encounters a young man who tells her, ?I?m looking for a door.? What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly drawn by its power, Suzume reaches for the knob? Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster.

?The stars, then sunset, and the morning sky.

Within that realm, it was as though all time had melted together in the sky?

Never-before-seen scenery, encounters and farewells? A myriad of challenges await her on her journey. Despite all the obstacles in her way, Suzume?s adventure shines a ray of hope upon our own struggles against the toughest roads of anxiety and constraints that make up everyday life. This story of closing doors that connect our past to the present and future will leave a lasting impression upon all of our hearts.

Drawn in by these mysterious doors, Suzume?s journey is about to begin.

Stalingrad, now known as Volgograd, was the site of the longest and bloodiest battle of the Second World War, a clash between the German Wehrmacht and the Soviet forces which lasted from the summer of 1942 to the winter of 1943. The written words of the soldiers caught up in that infernal bubble testify to the atrocity of the war. No rest for the weary, especially when it comes to Oscar campaigning. Focus Features has set up the first Oscars FYC special screening and conversation of the awards season for Tom McCarthy?s ?Stillwater? with star Matt Damon and the writer and director scheduled to attend in-person at the 350-seat Harmony Gold Theater in Los Angeles.

AMPAS members received an invitation on Wednesday for the special screening and conversation that will take place on Sunday, Aug. 1, with an option to bring a guest. The invite included an asterisk at the bottom of the email stating, ?masks must be worn inside the theater.? No other additional information was included in the email regarding theater capacity, vaccinations or any social distancing requirements or protocols.

?It says masks must be worn, but I don?t know if that?s going to be a packed theater or not,? an active voting member of the Academy shares with Variety who wished to remain anonymous. ?I love going to the movies, but I don?t want to risk it.?

Focus Features also had invited SAG and Oscar voters to the New York premiere of ?Stillwater? in New York at Jazz at Lincoln Center on July 26. While that screening also had a mandatory mask policy, a reporter from Variety noticed that one of the cast members of the movie ? along with the actor?s family members ? chose not to wear masks while watching ?Stillwater.?

The studio has been monitoring COVID reports daily and has said the theater will not be seated to full capacity while adhering to all local guidelines set by Los Angeles and the state of California.

The LA Oscars screening comes just hours after the CDC released recommendations that some vaccinated people resume wearing masks indoors in areas with high or substantial transmission. COVID-19 numbers have been spiking due to the infectious delta variant, with Hollywood labor unions recently agreeing to allow production companies to mandate vaccines for ?Zone A? workers, which includes actors and others who must be on set without masks.

The campaigning for awards will kick off this year, as is tradition, with the fall festivals. The Venice Film Festival announced their lineup on Monday, which included another Focus Features awards hopeful, ?The Card Counter? from Paul Schrader and starring Oscar Isaac. The Toronto International Film Festival revealed their lineup, which included Kenneth Branagh?s ?Belfast.? At the same time, New York Film Fest just announced their opening and centerpiece selections ? Joel Coen?s ?The Tragedy of Macbeth? from A24 and Jane Campion?s ?The Power of the Dog? from Netflix.

This marks the first year the Academy has banned studios from sending DVD screeners and other physical media from being sent to voters. Instead, the films can be viewed in a theater or on the secure Academy Streaming Room, where voters can access all eligible contenders.

Feeling confident about Damon and the film?s awards prospects, Focus Features hosted the world premiere of ?Stillwater? out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received a five-minute standing ovation from attendees. As the credits rolled, the 50-year-old Damon began to tear up at the cheers from the audience. His portrayal of Bill Baker, a midwestern father, relentlessly trying to prove the innocence of his daughter (Abigail Breslin) after she?s imprisoned for murder in France, is one of the best-reviewed performances of his career, probably his strongest turn since his snubbed and astounding work in 1999?s ?The Talented Mr. Ripley.?

Damon has been a popular and beloved figure within the Academy ranks. He was a double nominee for best actor and original screenplay, winning for the latter for ?Good Will Hunting? (1997) alongside his co-writing best friend, Ben Affleck. The screenwriting duo will be reuniting once again later this year on Ridley Scott?s ?The Last Duel,? in which the two will star from a script they co-wrote with Oscar-nominated scribe Nicole Holofcener (?Can You Ever Forgive Me??). After ?Good Will Hunting,? Damon has landed two other Oscar acting nominations ? for ?Invictus? (2009) for supporting actor and for ?The Martian? (2015) in lead actor. His last Oscar nomination was in the best picture category, as one of the five producers of Kenneth Lonergan?s ?Manchester by the Sea? (2016). The film won two Oscars for original screenplay and best actor for Casey Affleck (a role that Damon was originally supposed to play).

McCarthy has received three Oscar nominations during his career, winning one for original screenplay for ?Spotlight? (2015) alongside his co-writer Josh Singer. He was also nominated for directing the same year, and the film went on to win best picture, the first winner since ?The Greatest Show on Earth? (1952) to win just two statues. His other nom came with Bob Peterson and Pete Docter for co-writing Pixar?s ?Up? (2009).

?Stillwater? will open in theaters this Friday, July 30.

Satire show host Jan Böhmermann is letting the clock run out on signing a declaration of discontinuance, the German lawyer of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed.

Erdogan’s council, Michael-Hubertus von Sprenger, told news agency AFP that he is now preparing to file an injunction against the German comedian within the month.

When asked by news agency AFP whether or not the matter will, in the end, be settled in court, von Springer replied: “Yes, I assume.”

Two weeks ago, Böhmermann read out a so-called “Defamatory Poem” about Erdogan on his show “Neo Magazine Royale” where he purposefully used insulting language. The declaration of discontinuance called for the 35-year-old comedian to never repeat the poem or start circulating it again.

In a letter rejecting the terms of the cease and desist order, Böhmermann’s lawyer, Christian Schertz, wrote that that the context of the poem “has been obviously overlooked,” quoted the German newspaper “Süddeutsche Zeitung.”

The satirical poem was not broadcast or circulated as a singular item, explained Schertz, “but rather as part of an overall view on what is allowed in Germany and what is not.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Thursday the German government is still reviewing Turkey’s formal request to prosecute Böhmermann for insulting a foreign head of state.

    ZDF lends support to Satirist

German public broadcaster ZDF, which airs Böhmermann’s show, released a statement to the prosecutor’s office in Mainz on Thursday, which defended Böhmermann’s poem as “legal.”

The broadcaster consulted the law firm Redeker Sellner Dahs, which found that “the disputed sequence including the so-called “Defamatory Poem” was permitted by law,” the statement read. “Therefore, criminal boundaries were not crossed.”

They said the constitutionally secured “freedom of satire” entails the use of “gross stylistic devices, regardless of whether they meet personal or general taste levels.”

In their statement to the prosecutor, ZDF also said its initial decision to remove the Böhmermann clip was based on the broadcaster’s quality guidelines and had nothing to do with the legality of the segment.

However, there are editors at ZDF that want to resurrect the libelous poem clip and repost it online, according to a letter circulated by the editorial department, confirmed a ZDF spokesman on Thursday.

In the letter, they state “We would like to see the ‘Defamatory Poem’ returned to the media library from the poison cabinet- as an article of contemporary history.”

The ZDF spokesman said that despite the letter, the video will not be reposted online.

The Böhmermann case has sparked controversy not only in Germany and Turkey, but also worldwide. US newspaper “The Washington Post” lambasted Merkel’s approach to Erdogan’s request to prosecute saying: “Alarmingly, German Chancellor Angela Merkel is at least pretending to take it seriously.”

A recent poll of more than 61,000 German readers of Focus Online magazine showed 82 percent of those polled viewed the poem as defensible and some 78 percent thought the German government should defend Böhmermann.

The Böhmermann case has unleashed a diplomatic crisis for Merkel, who has had to defend freedom of speech in Germany as well as downplaying Ankara’s political influence as the two countries work together to implement a controversial EU-Turkey refugee deal.

Cannes, May 17, 2022 ? HanWay Films has closed sales on multiple territories to award-winning writer Rebecca Lenkiewicz?s (Ida, Disobedience, Colette) directorial debut Hot Milkbased on the bestselling novel by Deborah Levy and starring Academy Award nominee Jessie Buckley, Fiona Shaw and Vicky Krieps. IFC Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights and HanWay Films also closed a multi-territory deal with MUBI for UK, Ireland, Italy, Latin America and Turkey. Additional deals include Metropolitan Films (France), The Searchers (Benelux), Scanbox (Scandinavia), M2 (Eastern Europe), A-One (Baltics), Front Row (Middle East) and Shaw (Singapore). The deal with IFC was negotiated between HanWay Films MD Gabrielle Stewart with IFC Film?s President Arianna Bocco and SVP of Acquisitions Scott Shooman for the Bonnie Productions feature.

Hot Milk was developed by Bonnie Productions together with Film4 and is produced by Academy Award® nominee and BAFTA Award winner Christine Langan and Kate Glover. Executive producers are Farhana Bhula, Ollie Madden and Daniel Battsek for Film4. Heads of production include Cinematographer Christopher Blauvelt (Emma, First Cow), Costume Designer Sophie O?Neill (The Outfit, Ali & Ava), Production Designer Maxine Carlier (Everybody?s Talking About Jamie, Fish Tank), Editor Lucia Zucchetti (The Queen, Ratcatcher) and Make-up and Hair designer Nicole Stafford (Men, The Death of Stalin).

Lenkiewicz delves into the complexities of a relationship between a single mother and daughter in Hot Milk where the heat and atmosphere of Almería become an epic canvas for this intimate exploration of sex, love and the bonds that tie us all together.

Rose (Shaw) and her daughter Sofia (Buckley) travel to the Spanish seaside town of Almería to consult with the shamanic Dr Gomez, a physician who could possibly hold the cure to Rose?s mystery illness, which has left her bound to a wheelchair. But in the sultry atmosphere of this sun-bleached town Sofia, who has been trapped by her mother?s illness all her life, finally starts to shed her inhibitions, enticed by the persuasive charms of enigmatic traveller Ingrid (Krieps). Sofia?s increased freedom becomes too much for her controlling mother, and as the hot sun beats down, their relationship simmers with pent-up resentments and bitterness, threatening to tear the fragile threads that hold them together, and leading them to a dramatic conclusion.

IFC Films has snapped up North American rights to Palme d?Or winner Cristian Mungiu?s Cannes competition contender R.M.N.

The film stars Marin Grigore and Judith State. R.M.N. is produced by Mungiu with Mobra Films and executive produced by Tudor Reu. Co-producers include Pascal Caucheteux and Gregoire Sorlat of Why Not Productions, Sean Wheelan of Filmgate Films, Anthony Muir and Kristina Börjeson Nof Film I Väst, and Delphine Tomson of Les Films Du Fleuve.

IFC Films will release the movie theatrically in 2022.

The film follows Matthias (Grigore) after he quits his job in Germany a few days before Christmas to return to his multi-ethnic Transylvanian village. He wishes to involve himself more in the education of his son, Rudi, left for too long in the care of his mother, Ana, and to rid the boy of the unresolved fears that have taken hold of him. He?s preoccupied with his old father, Otto, and also eager to see his ex-lover, Csilla (Judith State). When a few new workers are hired at the small factory that Csilla manages, the peace of the community is disturbed, underlying fears grip the adults, and frustrations, conflicts and passions erupt through the thin veneer of apparent understanding and calm.

Mungiu’s first feature West premiered in the Directors? Fortnight in 2002. In 2007, he won the Palme d?Or for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. He next returned to Cannes in 2009 as a writer, producer, and co-director with the collective episodic film Tales From the Golden Ageand his feature that followed, Beyond The Hillswon best screenplay and best actress at Cannes in 2012, and was later shortlisted for the best international feature category at the Oscars. He returned to Cannes in 2016 with Graduation and won the best director honor.

R.M.N. marks the fifth time IFC Films and Mungiu have partnered on distribution.

?[Christian] is one of the best directors working in cinema today and his incredible body of work has made a lasting impression on the global stage,? said Arianna Bocco, president of IFC Films. ?We are so honored he has made IFC Films his home once again. We were absolutely blown away by R.M.N. and are delighted to work with Cristian to bring the film to North American audiences.?

Added Mungiu: ?I am very happy that 15 years after 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days I am back in Cannes and part of the Official Selection. It means even more that I am able to continue working with the people who have stood by me all these years, in my attempt to make my films reach as many people as possible, in as many theaters as possible. I hope they will help me communicate that once again through a story set in a tiny little place, I try to speak about us, today. I think it?s also good to check what are the limits of our freedom as filmmakers today in a world where political correctness started setting limits about what is appropriate to say ? and what is not. I feel I owe one explanation: RMN in English is NMR: Nuclear Magnetic Resonance ? basically a brain investigation. Given how the world looks today, I feel we need one.?

The deal was negotiated by senior vp of acquisitions and productions for IFC Films Scott Shooman with Eva Diederix on behalf of Wild Bunch, and CAA Media Finance. Wild Bunch is handling international sales.
