Low poly meets high speeds with the release of Neodori Forever from Strobetano and Crescent Moon Games. Should players get into that good old world of windmills and thrills, or is it more of a fade out?

Neodori Forever Review

For those expecting something on par with Hotshot Racing’s 32-bit low poly action, keep those expectations in mind – plenty. Neodori Forever takes things back a few decades with a game that manages to be even simpler than SEGA’s 1986 OutRun.

In this title, players are given a smooth ride (one in 27, in fact) and are tasked with getting from point to point without running out of gas. No need to worry about the clock running out; As long as there is fuel in the tank and you don’t cause too much damage to your car, you will be able to move on to the next area. Be careful though; those who die out will explode in a fiery inferno over a copyright-dodging version of Toto’s Africa.

If anything, Neodori Forever is a downgrade of SEGA’s Ferrari-loving classic. It’s not just the overall structure; there are no alternate paths or even alternate songs to choose from. Rather, it’s the manipulation that ultimately makes this title; the 1981 Cyanus is just way too stiff with its steering. There’s a designated drift button, but that too is a little stuffy, with overcompensation with drift that’s downright manic. Even the nudge can’t get people out of a pickle; there is simply no reason to vent the nitrous. This is not a goldilocks situation; Neodori Forever just can’t get it right.

There are, however, a few things to spice up the overall gameplay. A number of coins await players along the track, which can be collected as players run. There are also a number of speed traps and rival racers to consider; you meet one of them and they will have to deal with a law enforcement officer or a speedster looking to cause damage and get you off the road or eat their dust.

All of these features are nice gestures, but there’s just no urgency at all. Neodori Forever completes each level in just a few minutes, and there is no sequel between each level, so you only need to get to the end of each stage to progress. New levels are unlocked after previous ones, which is fine, but the entire game can be completed sooner rather than later.

This isn’t inherently a bad thing; titles like SEGA’s Daytona USA managed to make an impact with just three titles to their name. However, there is simply no challenge here; there are curves and cars to battle, sure, but it’s just a little too carefree and low stakes to stop people giving it their all. It’s almost as if all the care goes into the graphic design rather than the content of the game itself.

That means there’s a new introductory stage, a moody cinematic mini-level where Sonic and Tails race through the rubble of the Death Egg to find where Robotnik has crashed. Stage transitions make the adventure seamless, as do new boss mechanics and new gimmicks like a snowboard stage that’s more reminiscent of Sonic Adventure’s take on the Ice Cap area.

You’re constantly bombarded with new mechanics, as well as old stage gimmicks repurposed in interesting and inventive ways. Along the way, the experience is peppered with dialogue-free 2D cutscenes, where lovingly crafted sprite work tells you everything you need to know ? just like in Mania and S3K. The cinematic flair on display, especially towards the end of the game when the story picks up speed, is brilliant. He does more with less.

The soundtrack is excellent too. It mixes new versions of the music from the Game Gear version with new melodic additions and elements borrowed from other games. Again, that’s the kind of fan service these obsessives are best at delivering – culminating in an insanely good Metal Sonic boss theme that weaves together every bit of music associated with the classic Sonic-era character, including understood the theme from the original Triple Trouble.

The color palette is impeccable.

It’s just a brilliant experience. The cover of Suitcase is sober but terribly beautiful I find. We see on the front the young Yuko in her schoolgirl costume and her long blue hair. We find it on the back facing what seems to be the big bad of the game. On the other hand, forget the American box of the game, a real disaster. I don’t know who drew the heroine on this US cover but I think I would have done much better when I was a teenager. A disaster, as often.

If the title “The Fantasm Soldier” could evoke a whole bunch of preconceived ideas about this game, it will ultimately be nothing, except indeed the warrior costume that Xena would not have denied. In reality, the term “Fantasm” in the title is distorted in its translation, since it will in fact be a question of evoking the “dream” or the “fantasy” world, and therefore has no connection with any link sexual.

So let’s go back to the game scenario.

It all starts in Japan. Yuko, a young schoolgirl, has a strange dream in which the world is in danger and in the grip of climatic upheavals. The next day she notices that a deluge is falling on the city and strangely resembles her prediction. Reiko, a friend, tells him that she plans to leave town and bids him farewell, all against the backdrop of mysterious motives.

Right after this encounter, a demon appears out of nowhere and tries to attack Yuko. A voice from nowhere tells her that she can defend herself and a magic sword called “Valis” appears. Decked out in this blade, she will cross the city in search of the truth.

Yuko will end up meeting Queen Valia of “Fantasy World” (which will also be translated as “Dreamland” in the following parts) who tells her that the human world and the “fantasy” world are in danger. An evil king known as Rogles uses the power of Yin (the famous Yin and Yang) to seize power, and at the same time managed to break and split the power of Yang into several stones, the famous ” Fantasy Jewels?. Its five chief generals are in possession of a stone and carry out the vile plans of their emperor.

Unfortunately the warriors of the “fantasy” world cannot act because under the influence of the hypnotic power of Rogles. So Valia had to find a warrior from the human world to help her in her task.

Here is in a few lines how our heroine Yuko will find herself in the middle of a war threatening the balance of the worlds. Without wanting to spoil the story, know that during the adventure we will see Reiko, her best friend, in unfortunate circumstances.

Suitcase first of the name, like all the episodes which will follow one another (Syd of Valis except) forcefully uses manga culture. If you long press the button on the sword, it concentrates to work its magic (but you will have to acquire a power later in the game, I will come back to this). A key up and jump allows you to jump higher, while if you press C you do a slide / roll, very effective for crossing certain ravines or avoiding blows.

An HP gauge is visible at the top of the screen as well as an MP (magic) gauge that you can fill with options scattered throughout the game. You start the game with three lives but ?one ups? are hidden here and there. Similarly, you can catch up to 3 power ups making your sword more effective.

If at the start of the game your blows will be melee, with a first power up, your sword will launch balls of energy at a distance, which multiply with the power ups. The game does not offer any guard system, so you will have to be particularly vigilant about enemy attacks or projectiles sent to you.

To gain power or restore your energy and magic, you will have to destroy artifacts scattered throughout the levels, like a Castlevania. In each level you will be able to find a new sword that will have its own attack.

With each defeated boss you will win a ring containing the power of the “Fantasm Jewels” which you can therefore trigger if you have enough MP. In the package you will have a flame dragon that will protect you for a short time, ice projectiles that go in all directions, or other effective multidirectional shots. This choice of powers is made from an inventory menu.

You will therefore cross a total of seven rather linear levels, except for levels 3 and 7 which are labyrinths with chasms or other traps to avoid. If the first serves as an introduction to Yuko’s story and takes place in our world in Japan, the others will be places in “Fantasy World” such as the top of a snow-capped mountain, the interior of an erupting volcano , the side of the volcano, a cursed forest or a temple in ruins to end with the castle of Emperor Rogles. Each level will end with a boss.

Is the technique up to the seductive Yuko?

Let’s already remember that this is the first part of the saga on Mega Drive and that it is the adaptation of the 8-bit NES and MSX versions. The Nec PC Engine CD Rom version will be released a year later and will benefit from much more beautiful animated sequences and digitized voices. It will also correct some defects of the title, such as the slowness of our character (but I will come back to this), while offering a different color palette.

Suitcase, first of the name, is therefore a title technically in the average but which we clearly feel that it comes from 8-bit versions. Whether by the choice of colors, or the often very “square” side of the decorations that surround us.

The title also suffers from a few problems such as very perfectible collision management with sprites (or our character) which can ?disappear? when hit. These disappearances of sprites are quite frequent when there are too many elements on the screen (especially a lot of projectiles).

On the other hand the animation of our heroine, even if it is relatively well broken down, is really slow. If you look at the PC Engine CD Rom version, you will see that they have greatly modified this aspect of the game, making our heroine more agile and fast. With a game that still requires some reflexes to avoid enemy fire or obstacles, this slowness can often seem painful.

The gameplay also shows many flaws with risky jump management, especially if you want to reach distant platforms. The best solution is ultimately to slide into the void to reach the other side of the abyss. This lack of responsiveness in the jumps will also be a recurring problem in the saga Suitcase. Fortunately, the platform phases are not numerous, but do not expect to avoid enemies by jumping, at least not easily.

But let’s not tarnish the picture too much. The rigidity of the gameplay does not prevent having a good time with this title which pushes us to move forward, if only to admire the cutscenes. Much fewer than in Suitcase III, they are no less successful. All served by a rather nice soundtrack that sticks well to the universe.

To finish on this purely technical chapter, the decorations display some parallel scrollings bringing a little depth in certain levels. The enemies are varied, changing with each level, and the bosses will give you a bit of a headache without being insurmountable. Besides, the game is intended to be relatively easy, at least it won’t give players used to this type of action game a sweat.

Suitcase is the first episode of a saga that deserves to be known. Laying the beginnings of a well-constructed story and above all served by quality cinematics, Valis The Fantasm Soldier is necessarily the least “successful” opus but remains a good little action game. It will therefore be necessary to ignore its aging technique, its somewhat soft gameplay and its few collision problems to get to know this saga which remains dear to my heart as a gamer.

Not existing in European version, you will have to be satisfied with the Japanese or US version which for once does not seem to have too abominable translations (in spite of obvious errors and an awful box).
