Heating a room can be an expensive affair, gas prices fluctuate considerably and the necessary cubic meters go through it. Egloo claims that this can be done cheaper, for about 10 cents a day.

Egloo: simple and smart

Egloo uses candles to heat the room. After the tea lights have been placed on the bottom plate, a grid is placed over it.

On top of this is a small, earthenware ‘room’ with an even larger copy on top. The largest has an opening at the top and through the process that will take place in the Egloo, heat will come out.

This method of heating is not new, but this product has managed to turn it into a practical, good-looking product. In this way you have stylish decoration, which also brings heat into the room, so that you ultimately save money on heating costs.

Also read: these transparent roof tiles generate energy

Cheap heating

In the video, the makers indicate that Egloo can heat a room of 20 square meters with four candles, which burn for about five hours. During this period the temperature will increase by about two to three degrees Celsius.

Quite an achievement for four small candles. Of course, it can also be used to warm your hands, make a cup of tea, or even light a cigarette. Don’t be distracted by the dull voice in the video.

There has been a considerable run in this way of heating, especially due to the increasing heating costs in the winter period. However, it is difficult to buy the Egloo in the Netherlands, but more about that below.

Egloo is in any case an environmentally friendly alternative to raise the temperature in a room a bit, without having to turn on the heating.

There are several products that do this, each in their own way. Consider, for example, a radiator fan such as the Speed ??Comfort, which distributes the heat from the radiator better and faster throughout the room.

This is how Egloo is made

During the crowdfunding campaign, a video was also shared showing how the product was created and how it is made (by hand).

In this we see that a lot of attention and time is spent on the product and then the savings are also a nice bonus!

Buy Egloo (in the Netherlands)

Egloo can be found on IndieGoGo and has already well exceeded its financial goal. You can buy the Egloo in the official webshop.

If you want to buy the Egloo in the Netherlands, you will soon find out that the product is only available in the official shop. There are alternatives, which may look a little less fancy, but offer exactly the same function.

These products use the same principle to heat the room faster and more effectively. This makes it easy to save on heating costs, which is of course desirable with the high gas rates.

There is no longer a mini model of the iPhone 14, and for the first time even the ‘cheapest’ version of Apple’s popular smartphone costs more than a thousand euros. Of the new features of the fourteenth generation iPhones that the fruit brand presented last night, we especially remember the possibility to send an SOS emergency message via satellite.

As we wrote down in our preview, Apple has replaced the relatively small (5.4-inch) iPhone mini with a 6.7-inch Plus model. That device is considered the big brother of the ‘normal’ iPhone 14 with a 6.1-inch screen, which is now the entry-level model. The price is far from accessible, because for a new iPhone must now be coughed up at least 1,019 euros, and another 150 euros more for the Plus version. In comparison, the iPhone 13 and 13 mini cost 909 euros and 809 euros respectively when they were introduced a year ago. Those phones will remain available for the time being, just like the Series 12.

On a more affordable model, it is now waiting for the next generation iPhone SE. The last version dates from April 2020 and currently costs 559 euros for the version with 64 GB storage space.

Enough about the pricing, let’s take a look at what’s new under the hood of the iPhone 14 (Plus). Then we take a closer look at the more advanced iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.

Both iPhones have an improved OLED screen (Super Retina XDR) with a peak brightness of 1,200 nits and support for Dolby Vision. Power source on duty is an A15 Bionic chip with 5-core GPU (formerly 4-core) which is not only faster but also extends battery life. For example, you can play up to 26 hours of video on these devices, which is 7 hours more than with the iPhone 13.

G-forces up to 256 G

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus also feature a new 12 MP main camera with a wider f1.5 aperture and a similarly new TrueDepth (f1.9) camera on the front. Movie mode is now available in 4K at 30 frames per second and at 24 fps, and a new action mode delivers “extremely smooth video with correction for large shakes and shakes,” according to Apple.

With an accelerometer that can measure G-forces up to 256 G, the iPhone 14 offers Crash Detection to detect serious car accidents. For example, if the occupants are unconscious, the phone will automatically notify the emergency services. According to Apple, it uses an algorithm trained based on “more than a million hours of driving and collision data.”

iPhone 14 models now also support SOS emergency notification via satellite, so that messages can be exchanged with emergency services even outside the range of cellular or Wi-Fi networks. Satellites are moving targets with a low bandwidth, so it can take several minutes for a message to be sent. For now, the service will start (in November) first in the United States and Canada. The service is free for two years, after which you can switch to a paid subscription.

Pro a Pro Max

May it all be a little more, then there are also a Pro and a Pro Max version of the iPhone 14. The difference between the two models is mainly in the screen diagonal: 6.1 versus 6.7-inch. These are very bright (up to 2,000 nits) displays with ProMotion technology, which can be switched back to a refresh rate of 1 Hz. This paves the way for an ‘always-on’ access screen that displays key information around the clock. This gadget has long been commonplace with many Android top devices, but Apple has only applied it to the Watch until now.

The biggest eye-catcher of the Pro and Pro Max is the Dynamic Island. It is actually the successor of the notch (the cutout in the screen that is still on the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus, for example) that is more in the form of a Tic Tac candy in the most expensive devices. It still houses the TrueDepth camera and some sensors, but the smartphone can software make the black recess larger, for example to show warnings, notifications or activities (from the iOS 16 operating system, which will be released on Monday, September 12).

The Dynamic Island is actually mainly a cosmetic procedure that camouflages the black recess, but still, smartly found by Apple (and therefore probably very soon to be found on other smartphones).

Quad-pixel

Other differences with the iPhone 14 (Plus) mainly have to do with the main processor (here a faster A16 Bionic) and the new Pro camera system. That includes, for the first time on an iPhone, a 48MP main camera with a quad-pixel sensor. It is able to bundle four individual pixels into one large pixel (of 2.44 µm), which would give better results in less favorable lighting conditions.

Also onboard: an improved 12MP ultra-wide-angle camera and telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, a newly designed True Tone Flash with a matrix of nine LEDs (which change patterns based on the focal length) and the action mode previously featured in the iPhone 14 (Plus). Apple’s top devices can film in 4K at 30 and 24 fps, but 8K recording (one of the rumors before the launch) is not yet for this generation of Pro devices.

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are available in deep purple, silver, gold and space black in 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities. Prices start at 1,329 and 1,479 euros respectively, and the absolute top model from the iPhone 14 family makes you 2,129 euros lighter.

The South Korean LG surprisingly unveiled a 42-inch OLED display at the IFA tech fair in Berlin, which transforms from a flat to a curved screen at the push of a button. According to the manufacturer, this makes this Flex LX3 the ideal device for the fervent gamers among TV viewers.

With televisions, the hype of curved screens has died down for a while, and many manufacturers have even stopped production. Gamers, on the other hand, are generally a fan of curved screens, and there are many models to be found in the gaming monitor segment. The advantage of a curved screen, according to the enthusiasts, is that you are literally surrounded by the action in a game; you are, as it were, drawn into the picture.

From 42 to 27 inches

You don’t need that as much when watching TV, and a classic flat screen is usually preferred. The Flex LX3 fits the bill, with a device that can be either flat or curved. The bend is driven by a motor mechanism and is adjustable in twenty different levels, up to a wide curvature of 900R. Operation is simply done with the remote control, which also gives you access to some preferred settings regarding the curvature.

Flex LX3. © LG

Important for gamers are the fast response time of 0.1 milliseconds and the compatibility with both G-Sync and AMD FreeSync Premium. Furthermore, the 4K panel of the Flex LX3 can be tilted up to ten degrees and, via the adjustable stand, can be positioned 140 millimeters higher or later. Another handy feature is that you are not obliged to use the full 42-inch screen; in some games (think shooters) that can be just a bit too much of a good thing. At those moments, you can switch back to a 32- or 27-inch screen size, with the rest of the display forming a black border.

Sound and light show

The LX3 also includes a Game app, which provides access to custom screensavers and services such as Twitch and YouTube. There is also a MultiView mode to view content from two different sources at the same time. Other features include a built-in microphone, extra USB ports for the connected computer, two integrated 40-watt speakers and support for Dolby Atmos.

Also worth mentioning is the adjustable lighting function at the rear, which is reminiscent of the Ambilight technology from Philips/TP Vision. The lighting effects synchronize with the video or audio of the content on the screen, and should provide that little bit of extra atmosphere.

A target price has not yet been announced, but according to an LG spokesperson, this is in line with a (flat) 55-inch OLED television from the brand.

The IFA technology fair in Berlin is back, but not all companies are making an appearance this week. For example, B&O preferred a separate event elsewhere in the same Berlin. The Danish audio specialist presented its Beosound Theater there: a stylish and powerful soundbar that you can match with your current and future TVs.

The Beosound Theater is somewhat reminiscent of the Eclipse and Contour from the BeoVision range of the Danes. However, there is a big difference: where the two Beovision models are supplied complete with a television screen (B&O has been working with LG for this for many years), the new Theater is available with and without a TV.

Twelve speaker drivers

You can of course still seamlessly combine this soundbar with an LG panel of your choice, with a wafer-thin OLED model being preferred from an aesthetic point of view. But B&O believes that the Theater is suitable for almost any television from 55 inches, regardless of brand. It has everything to do with the ingenious bracket which can be mounted on the back of the soundbar. When you screw the TV against it, it gives the impression of floating just above the soundbar: very nice. You only have to be careful with somewhat thicker televisions, because the frame can then block part of the sound of the so-called ‘upfiring’ drivers. Those speakers are partly responsible for the Dolby Atmos sound that the Beosound Theater supports (see box).

Speaking of the technical side of the soundbar: a total of twelve speaker drivers are housed in the housing. Together they provide a 7.1.4 surround configuration with a speaker power of up to 800 watts and a pressure level of 112 dB. The burly center speaker is flanked by two custom-built 6.5-inch woofers – according to the manufacturer, these are the largest woofers in a soundbar to date.

Expensive slatted hood

During a first listening test of music and film fragments, in a very spacious living room, the Beosound Theater immediately convinced. The bass is quite deep, without drowning out the mids and highs. With two Beolab 28 rear speakers added, the chase scene from James Bond: No Time To Die might have sounded just a bit more impressive, but we didn’t think such a setup was a must. We would also have no money for it, because the B&O soundbar already has a very hefty price tag of (no typing error) 6,490 euros on its own. In the base version, that is. If, on the other hand, money is no object, know that you can expand the Beosound Theater with up to sixteen (!) extra speakers if you wish.

We already told you that the Theater grows with your television. For example, the front panel can be replaced by another one in no time at all. The standard copy consists of black speaker cloth, the soundbar that we were able to test was finished with a slatted hood with solid oak – good for an additional cost of (just sit down) a thousand euros.

Wide, wider, widest

But what if you want to replace your 55-inch TV in a few years with a larger model of roughly 65-inch. Then the B&O optical soundbar is actually a bit too narrow. But the manufacturer has also thought of that. On either side of the device are (polished and anonized) aluminum end pieces that can be replaced by wider pieces. They are available for 66- and 77-inch LG screens anyway, but according to the Danish manufacturer they can be custom made for any screen if desired. What these accessories or customization should cost, we will only hear when the Beosound Theater comes on the market on October 3. The same applies to the optional rotating base and wall mount to fix the colossus to the wall.

Thanks to this bracket, the Beosound Theater can be combined with almost any television according to B&O. The aluminum end pieces are also visible at the bottom left, with which you can make the soundbar a bit wider over the years.

Also noteworthy in the whole upgrade story of the Beosound Theater is the Mozart platform. This software provides the necessary speed, stability and multi-room capabilities when streaming music, but also guarantees a strong example of compatibility. For example, in Berlin we heard and saw how the Beosound Theater was effortlessly linked to a portable Beosound loudspeaker from a few years ago, but also – and above all – to a Beogram Turntable (record player) from 1972. That’s a device from half a century ago. . Or as B&O puts it: ‘It is not only the intention that the Beosound Theater survives a number of your televisions, it is at least as important that the device also works with earlier B&O products, even if they are thirty or even fifty years old. old.’

What is and does Dolby Atmos do?

The great asset of a home cinema system with Dolby Atmos is that you as a viewer are completely immersed in the film and the action. This is in contrast to classic 5.1 or 7.1 setups, which really just form a ‘horizontal ring’ of sound: the audio comes from the left, right, front and back, through channels predefined by the sound designer (think to a lightning strike or slamming door on the rear left speaker).

With Dolby Atmos, a 3D space is created, a so-called ‘sound bubble’, in which each sound can be given a specific place – in height and depth. In a cinema extra loudspeakers are mounted in the ceiling for this. With a soundbar like the BeoSound Theater.

You can of course still use this soundbar seamlessly. combine with an LG panel of your choice, with a wafer-thin OLED model being aesthetically preferable. But B&O believes that the Theater is suitable for almost any television from 55 inches, regardless of brand. This has everything to do with the ingenious bracket that can be mounted on the back of the soundbar. Polar is a company that already had the software available prior to our availability. Polar Flow. And your new watch called Polar A360 is compatible. This compatibility will open up many possibilities for us, since athletes will have access to a greater amount of resources to be able to continue with their training and achieve their goals and objectives.

Due to the needs that various athletes have when performing in different types of environments, Polar made its new terminal waterproofwhich will allow this watch not to be affected by our sweat, or external water sources during training.

Polar A360 also has a GPS that will allow the accompaniment in the routes that are made; Thanks to this option, a much more exact follow-up can be given when training in spaces where there are no marks to measure our route.

Nokia is presenting two smartphones and a tablet, which strongly emphasizes how much recycled material it does use. But that communication seems mainly greenwashing because after three years all updates stop, even though the device still works perfectly.

Nokia presents three new devices, the Nokia X30 5G, a 6.43-inch Android smartphone with a Snapdragon 695 5G chip with 6 gigabytes of RAM and 128 gigabytes of storage for 519 euros. Or a version with 8 gigabytes of RAM and 256 gigabytes of storage for 549 euros. We learn that the frame consists of recycled aluminum and the back of 65 percent recycled plastic. The packaging is largely made of recycled paper and by omitting the plug head, it is also smaller.

Nokia X30 © Nokia

The second device is the G60 5G, a 5.58-inch device with the same chip for 329 euros (4GB RAM and 128 GB storage) or 369 euros (6GB RAM and 128 GB storage). Here the plastic back is completely recycled and the frame is 60 percent.

Finally, the T21 is a 10.36 inch tablet on a Unisoc T612 chip with 4 gigabytes of RAM and 64 or 128 gigabytes of storage for 249 and 269 euros respectively. Again, a housing made of 60 percent recycled plastic and “all the durability and promise one would expect from a Nokia tablet,” according to the press release from HMD Global, today the company behind the Nokia brand.

Durable hardware, disposable software

But don’t set your expectations too high. Where a telephone is replaced soon after two years, a tablet is quickly kept in use for 4-5 years, especially if the device is given a second life for the children within the family.

That’s where the shoe pinches. For the T21, Nokia promises two years of OS upgrades and three years of security updates. That is not much for a device that technically can last twice as long. In addition, that timing starts today. If you buy the device within a year, you can safely enjoy it for another two years. The tablet will of course continue to work, but security problems will not be solved afterwards.

We asked HMD Global why that is so limited. The manufacturer does not give a clear answer to this, but does state that the current offer is already an improvement compared to the past:

?The T Series brings the promises of our previous G Series to the tablet space. The basic promise that was there on the G-series, namely two OS upgrades and three years of monthly security patches, is now coming to the T-series. We will revise our promises as we develop our G Series, but we consider this a strong offering for an entry level tablet.?

Smartphones up to three years

The two smartphones are doing slightly better, the X30 and the G60 5G receive three OS upgrades and security updates for the same length of time. We have to nuance that this is already one year better than the two years that most devices on Android have to do. Only recently, especially with the most recent Snapdragon chips, has that increased to three years. Only Samsung has been offering that term for a little longer. The difference with Apple is huge. Anyone who bought an iPhone 6S in 2015 will receive updates until this year. Five years or more is not an unusual term for the iPad either.

Still, it is remarkable that a well-known smartphone maker explicitly shows how strongly its devices focus on sustainability, while they are ripe for the garbage after three years in terms of software. In addition, the three devices, like most smartphones and tablets, have a battery that cannot be replaced, which means that the lifespan is limited there too.

The packaging is largely made of recycled paper and by omitting the plug head, it is also smaller.

The mobile market is increasingly competitive, and offers us options that stand out from the range of options that we previously had, let’s analyze one of the best options available in the mid-range mobile segment, the UMi Plus Ea mobile that is already available and that is quite accessible in terms of price with respect to the specifications it has.

One of the main issues to consider is that this mobile is of Chinese origin, which once again indicates that they are willing to make the technology available to all users. And this terminal is proof that they are succeeding.

Screen

UMi Plus E It is made in a metallic body that is made based on a design that is not so new with respect to some other mobiles on the market, but that will undoubtedly make us feel and appreciate the high quality of this mobile. The screen it has is 5.5 inches, a screen that is slightly larger than the average, and therefore it will allow us a better experience.

resolution

UMi Plus E It has a full HD resolution, so all our recordings or our photographs will be stored in a quality that can come out of this mobile as soon as we take these and import them to other devices. The pixels it has are 400 per inch, without a doubt a very good density that guarantees an impressive resolution.

Screen

And although the screen is one of the most fragile parts of mobile phones, it is protected by a Dinorex T2X ? 1 glass that will allow us to enjoy greater durability and resistance if we drop this mobile. Undoubtedly a very good feature to avoid any unforeseen event.

Processor

The processor of this magnificent UMi More E It is a Helio P20 chip that has 8 cores that works at a frequency of 2.3 GHz, which together with the 6 GB of RAM memory guarantee us to enjoy a very high speed and thus a better experience when using this terminal.

Memory

The internal storage of UMi More E It is also very striking, since we will have 64 GB of internal memory that does not stop there, since we can expand them by using a microSD, and all these great specifications can be ours for less than 200 euros, without a doubt a great opportunity.
