The images caused a wave of outrage and even led to a temporary closure of the controversial company. In February this year, it turned out new research that serious violations in slaughterhouses are not incidents but occur regularly. Pigs are brutally hunted, treated with electric shock devices and sometimes end up alive in the hot water of the scalding tank.

Petition offer to the House of Representatives and Minister Staghouwer
More than 58,000 people have now signed the petition with which Varkens in Nood asks the government to make independent and external camera surveillance in slaughterhouses mandatory. Today, the House of Representatives and Minister Staghouwer receive the petition separately. Director of Pigs in Need Frederieke Schouten: ?Even in slaughterhouses where NVWA inspectors are permanently present, things now regularly go wrong. It is the government’s turn to replace the current, failing supervision with an effective system that records and punishes all violations.?

All animals must be continuously in view so that animal cruelty never goes unnoticed

Reports NVWA

In February, reports requested from the NVWA showed that serious violations in the field of animal welfare also took place in 2019 and 2020 at several pig slaughterhouses. Especially when stunning and killing pigs, things often go wrong ? resulting in serious animal suffering. For example, there are pigs that regain consciousness while they are already hanging by a hind leg above the blood gutter. Live pigs also regularly drown in the hot water of the hotbed. NVWA inspectors indicate in their reports that they repeatedly register the same violations in the same slaughterhouses and that they do not always follow their advice.

Mandatory and independent camera surveillance
With the current camera surveillance, the recordings remain in the possession of the slaughterhouse and the footage is destroyed after a few weeks. NVWA inspectors can only view the images on site. That random check of random recordings is not very effective. Most violations go unnoticed this way.

Varkens in Nood argues for mandatory and independent supervision, whereby the NVWA can monitor the cameras directly from an external location. Schouten: ?All animals must be continuously in view so that animal cruelty never goes unnoticed.?

Hope you’ve already got to know our new challenge – Three Steps to Summer! Thanks to it, we will prepare for summer and take care of ourselves, not only in the context of the figure. I have prepared three elements for you, i.e. the title steps that will allow us to take care of our activity, diet and care, and thus develop good habits that will serve us even after summer is over. Are you ready? I do! So here we go with the steps – in this text I will focus primarily on the third one!

Step 1: Physical Activity

You know, I couldn’t start with anything else. Briefly – for three weeks, 5 times a week, we see each other at training LIVEs, and then in my application, where you will find a detailed training plan for the 3 weeks of the challenge. We train regularly! They are not only about achieving our goals, but also about making physical activity an integral part of our day. What is the most important thing? Regularity. At least 20-30 minutes a day!

Exercise serves us to strengthen the body – but not only. It cannot be overestimated how regular physical activity improves our mood! Thanks to it, we reduce the risk of low mood states and improve it in general. Exercise also helps to reduce the level of stress that so often accompanies us every day.

Step 2: Diet

If this word scares you, I reassure you. These three weeks are intended to teach us that a healthy diet is not only important, but also fully achievable without much sacrifice. And with it – better well-being and more energy, which we gain by providing the body with the necessary nutrients in the right doses.

We will learn what is healthy, balanced eatingbut at the same time we will treat ourselves to it sugar detox. For the duration of the challenge, we will try to put aside unhealthy snacks full of refined sugar, beverages sweetened with it and stop sweetening coffee and tea with it. Additionally we will learn the basics of proper supplementation – because it often happens that even despite a healthy diet, we lack something in the body (I’m looking at you, vitamin D). There is nothing wrong with the correct, balanced supplementation of minerals and vitamins! Finally, we will reinforce the habit I repeat like a mantra because it is so incredibly important – irrigation. We need water not only for survival, but also for a healthy and full life! We feel water shortages in every possible way, our condition, well-being, concentration, skin, hair, nails, but also the immune, digestive and blood systems suffer from them. Without water, we lose our strength, which is why fluid replenishment is crucial!

Step 3: Care

Now we come to the step I want to focus on the most today. You know – warm months are approaching, i.e. the season for shorts, dresses, short sleeves, and finally also for swimsuits. Wouldn’t it be good to enjoy firm and smooth skin to match the set with a great frame of mind and a dream figure? ?

This is why body care rituals will be among the habits we will work on. I got you used to the fact that we usually pay the most attention to the face, but not this time! If we want to feel as beautiful as possible in our skin, we have to take care of it! I already tell you how to do this.

We start in the morning, of course. Those of us who like morning showers (but also those “evening” ones!) Should definitely reach for a shower gel (RE)START, BABYwhich contains a large dose of probiotics. It not only perfectly cleanses the skin and refreshes us with the scent of citrus, but also “feeds” the naturally occurring beneficial bacteria on the skin. The proper microflora of the skin is its first shield against harmful microorganisms, it allows it to maintain its balance and strengthens it. In addition, the gel moisturizes the skin and brings it wonderful relief!

After showering, we must not forget about the balm, which will additionally protect the skin, strengthen it and nourish it. Let’s reach for YO-YO DE-ACTIVATOR, not only because of its smoothing, moisturizing and nourishing properties. It is also additional support for the aforementioned microbiome, but most of all, the balm limits the growth of adipose tissue and its formation, and at the same time regulates the metabolism of fat cells. As the name suggests, it helps fight the yo-yo effect that so often haunts us after eating changes.

In the evening, when we can devote more time to ourselves, we move on to the next stage of the challenge, i.e. dry brushing. Phlov offers a choice of two brushes for such massage – BRUSHING QUEEN in versions LOMBOK i classic.

Dry massage, i.e. body brushing, is a wonderful ritual whose roots often come from Bali. Its course is quite clear – we use a brush with soft bristles and “stroke” the skin with it. What does this give us? First of all, it exfoliates dead epidermis, thanks to which the skin becomes softer and takes on a better color. But the microcirculation stimulated during the massage is also responsible for a healthier shade, thanks to which we oxygenate the cells. The skin’s elasticity and firmness also increases. And at the same time, it is very pleasant – sometimes it takes a while to get used to this feeling, but don’t worry – that’s what our caring element of the challenge is based on!

And after the massage – and after washing the brush fibers under warm water, of course – it’s good to give your skin something extra. I recommend anti-stretch mark oil GO! OMEGA GO!, because it both reduces the visibility of stretch marks and helps prevent their formation. It makes the skin elastic, intensely moisturizes and strengthens it, increases resistance to stretching and supports its regeneration.

And it’s ready! The third step of the challenge THREE STEPS TO SUMMER ready! Good, effective skin care is just as important as the other elements of the challenge, so it’s worth remembering about it! And then one, two, three and a new habit is ready – and one for which our skin will thank us. Remember that an important element of well-being and mental comfort is a healthy, balanced diet, an appropriate dose of physical activity and the awareness that we care for our body and provide it with proper care. If these three elements come together – we will enter a summer full of energy and vitality! ?

All parents encounter difficulties with their children, but it is undoubtedly the issues around bedtime and children’s sleep that sit at the top of the podium. Normal, because if there is one thing that we are difficult to bear is the lack of sleep and rest. Solving the problems related to the child who does not want to sleep is vital when one is drawn into a downward spiral: fatigue, irritability, lack of patience… and goodbye to all the good reflexes of benevolent parents! And sometimes too, it’s the couple that takes a hit, the lack of evenings together weighs on us, when we have to sleep next to our child for two hours sometimes, until he falls asleep. So how do you get your baby or child to sleep?

Fortunately, there are solutions. Sometimes two or three tricks are enough, sometimes you don’t need to be accompanied by a sleep specialist to make things better. Do you feel like you’ve tried everything? This article is for you: read it to the end!

EXCEPTIONAL CONFERENCE SPECIAL SLEEP MONDAY MAY 16, 2022 AT 9 P.M.

Baby’s sleep is complicated? Does he fall asleep late, get up 10 times, wake up in the middle of the night? Charlotte will give a exceptional conference (and free) “The keys to peaceful nights and sunsets” EN LIVE. She will deliver the lessons and tips from her support of more than a thousand parents on the subject. See you on May 16… >To reserve your place for free, it’s here.

How to put a baby / child to sleep: our ?all-terrain? specialty

After having accompanied more than 1000 parents to find serene nights, and that we have managed to solve 99% of difficulties around sleep encountered in consultation: we will be able to give you an overview of the 6 main things that will make the difference.

The cases we encounter are multiple: it goes?

These families have tried everything: homeopathy, psychologists, child nurses? But nothing worked: the evenings remained nightmarish.

While each case is different, here are the 6 biggest things to know to help our child get to sleep?

Key n°1: make the bedroom a dream place

It seems silly but to rest, you prefer to sleep in a garage on a mattress on the floor with skulls drawn on the ceiling or in a room from a decorating magazine, with a cabin bed, dimmed light garland, soft cushions, duvet cozy and pretty library?

Making children want to cocoon in their room is the starting point. A small reorganization and a new decoration contribute to mark this new beginning.

Key n°2: give them the amount of attention they need

The objective is not necessarily to return at 4:30 p.m. to be sure to have spent the necessary X hours with our children. No, the goal is tobe really present with them. Not on our phone, not in our washing machine, not with a stopwatch in mind ?goal = put the kids to bed?. No, take the time to play, and really enjoy this moment with them, take the time to observe them, to laugh, in short to enjoy. Yes, it can be difficult to accept this letting go, but it is worth practicing. And let’s remember: it is not the number of hours spent with our child that is important but the quality of this time.

coaching he finally sleeps and so do we

Key n°3: how to put your child to sleep? Make sure he has EVERYTHING to go to bed

We do not pass the door of the room without having reviewed with him everything he could need, to anticipate the usual requests: on your bedside table, you have water, tissues, your comforters, your belly is full, you peed, etc.

Key n°4: take individual time for each child

For this, it may be interesting to put them to bed one after the other, in order of age., in order to spend a few minutes one-on-one with everyone. It is often during this little cuddly moment that our child will give us back his day and thus feel sufficiently listened to to be able to indulge. Talking about things that went wrong during the day allows you to evacuate anxieties and fall asleep more peacefully.

Tips against monsters: if we want to reassure them, it is better not to try to reason with them. Because if we tell him that watches don’t exist, he risks saying to himself ?Besides, it’s worrying, it’s only me who sees them?. Better to give him a sword to put next to his bed to fight them, it’s often more effective. ?Everything is fine, at worst, I will be able to cut them in half?.

Key n°5: respect the bedtime ritual

Little ritual that we will have previously determined with the child, and which should not however last three quarters of an hour? The main thing is not to remain focused on the idea that he must imperatively sleep at 8:30 p.m. The main thing is that everyone respects the other: if he stays quietly in his room, playing with a cuddly toy or reading a book, and without disturbing us, we can let him be.. We give up in front of the child who does not want to sleep, the ?Now you are sleeping!?, but ?You can play in your bed if you want, or look at a book?.

Key n°6: how to put your child to sleep: don’t be afraid of the rules!

Putting up a sign with the stages and rules of the evening is very useful, especially with those over two years old. Everyone is required to respect them and parents, first of all, must be convinced of one thing: their children are CAPABLE of falling asleep alone peacefully. Everything is fine. They don’t need ANYTHING. Another thing that everyone must have in mind: respecting the rest of the parents is essential, because it is on their shoulders that the balance of the family rests.

Editor’s note: If you want statistics on children’s bedtimes according to their ages, I invite you to read this article: How many hours of sleep in children according to their age? Bedtime ?

This behavior can be adopted under two conditions:

  1. be convinced that your child needs nothing to fall asleep, and
  2. having previously spent a little time one-on-one to evacuate any anxieties of the evening.

And the transition is also smooth if you explain the new rule to the child and stay firm: ?I know it’s not easy, but it will be good for everyone. I trust you, I know you can do it?.

When at the time I had problems putting Léon to bed, it was this conviction that changed everything! More determined, more serene, I was able to stay firm while transmitting to my son the calm and confidence necessary for him to fall asleep without difficulty.

Can we ?put someone to sleep??

Of course, you can’t force someone to sleep, whether they’re children or adults for that matter! (see our article on mild violence. We can therefore only bring together the ideal conditions (but it’s already huge!)

No question of letting your child cry and going through with force. As with any change, an adjustment period may be necessary. For a child who can only fall asleep with the hand of a parent, for example, we can start by staying present by his side, but on a chair, just at the entrance to the room (with a good book… and a glass of wine ?!) (it goes better!) ?Mom, are you there? Yes, yes, you can sleep, I’m here?. The next day, we do the same, but we go away a bit ?I’m going to extend the machine, I’ll be back in 10 minutes?. Then gradually, we go away a little longer and we end up removing the chair.

We hold on and what pride the day after the first night, when we can stick our sticker ?I managed not to get up at night?!

But the anxieties in all this?

Most often, the anxiety of the child who does not want to sleep comes from the anxiety of the parents. But there are cases where the child’s anxiety is deep.

In this case, the method to adopt is always the same from Dolto: talk to the child about the problem in depth, tell him that we understand him. This will help the anxiety to subside until it disappears. Admittedly, it can look magical. ?If it were that simple. And yes, often I do. This method used by psychologists works really well!

When tens of thousands of fruit trees are in full bloom at the end of April, then it is definitely spring – and probably the most beautiful season in Thurgau. The perfect time for a detour to eastern Switzerland. Whereby our basis for the long spring weekend – the Bad Horn Hotel & Spa ? actually knows how to score in all seasons. Two steps away from the refreshing Lake Constance and located in the triangle between Arbon, Rorschach and St. Gallen, there is a lot to discover all around. I have picked out the highlights for you and show in the following lines how varied three days around the Hotel Bad Horn can be designed.

Bad Horn Hotel & Spa ? Entspannungsoase am Bodensee

After we had already made a stopover at the Bad Horn Hotel & Spa in spring 2019 as part of our bike tour around Lake Constance, this time we are checking in for two nights. A lot has happened at the four-star superior hotel since our last visit. Between autumn 2019 and summer 2020, the east wing of the hotel was renovated in just under a year of construction. In addition to 42 spacious rooms, space was also created for a lobby bar and a fine dining restaurant on the ground floor.

After we spent the night in the western part of the spa area, which was built in 2010, during our last stay, we are allowed to use one of the new ones this time Superior Emerald Suites inspect. At first glance, the large window front with a view of Lake Constance catches the eye. Another eye-catcher is built into the paneled wall – the fireplace. And the effect fire blazing in it crackles almost as beautifully as a real campfire. The dark parquet floor and the carefully placed decorative elements reflect the maritime style that runs like a red thread through the hotel.

Eastern Switzerland spring highlight: Bluescht bike tour

After a first glance, the wonderful spring weather draws us outside. The weather forecast for the weekend is pretty mixed. Every minute of sunshine wants to be used. We have two of the hotel’s e-bikes for the afternoon Bluesch-Velotour reserved. The Bluescht-Velotour uses existing Switzerland-Mobility routes in around 36 kilometers through the blossoming landscape of Arbon via Romanshorn via Oberthurgau and back. The route can also be started directly in Horn as a round trip without any problems.

Since we already know the area relatively well, this time we will focus primarily on cycling and the apple trees in full bloom. For anyone traveling to this area for the first time, I recommend planning a stop or two. In Arbon, the bike tour leads past both the MoMö and the Saurer Museum. That Moated Castle Hagenwil shouldn’t be missed either. And if your stomach growls on the way, I can offer you a stop at the Wonderful in Arbon or the Restaurant zum Dornhof in Steinebrunn recommend.

Corner data of the Bluescht cycling tour

The map below shows the route of our version of the Bluescht Velotour. The route is 38 kilometers long and includes a climb of 380 meters in altitude. We needed almost 2.5 hours with e-bikes including a stop in Steinebrunn.

Fine Dining im Restaurant Wave

But you should definitely save up an appetite for your return to Bad Horn. With the «Al Porto» and the «Wave», the hotel under chef de cuisine Christian Göpel has two convincing restaurant concepts up its sleeve. For the first evening we have reserved a table at «Wave». The restaurant, which has been awarded 14 GaultMillau points, is located on the ground floor of the newly built east wing and was opened in July 2020. Here you can choose between a tasting menu or carefully selected à la carte dishes. We opt for the tasting menu and feast our way through six excitingly ?composed? ? Asian-inspired ? creations. Definitely a culinary address on Lake Constance that you should remember!

Art tour through St.Gallen

The next morning we are greeted by a cloudy sky. We know that from our last stay. But while we had no choice last time and continued to pedal through the pouring rain along the Lake Constance cycle path, today we are happy to have the opportunity to start the Saturday in comfort with an extensive “zmörgälä” without a guilty conscience. The only question that remains to be answered is how we organize our bad weather program. The options are manifold: a detour to Fliegermuseum Altenrheinthe visit of Forum Würth in Rorschach or a Stroll through the old town streets of Arbon?

My choice falls on the Art tour St. Gallen. The six-kilometre walk takes you from the St. Gallen train station to the city’s art hotspots; In addition to the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, the Museum im Lager, the Lokremise and the Kunsthalle, there is also art in the building or, of course, the red “City Lounge” by Pipilotti Rist and Carlos Martinez to discover.

Wellness afternoon in the Smaragd Spa

Back at the hotel we use the hazy weather for a few relaxing afternoon hours in the Smaragd Spa. The 1’500 m2 large wellness area extends over two floors. The sauna area, salt thermal baths and private spa suites are located in the basement. A special feature: depending on the water level, you can watch the fish swim past through the “portholes” of the sauna area.

One floor above is the indoor pool (and fitness area). This is connected to the outdoor whirlpool and the pier. Actually, I had made up my mind to swim a few laps in the lake. But the almost 11° water temperature seemed a bit fresh to me. Hard-nosed souls don’t let that stop them and refresh themselves after a sauna session in Lake Constance.

Enjoyable end of the day at Al Porto

After an all-round perfect day of bad weather, we head for the “Al Porto” this evening. The main restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. The dishes have a Mediterranean touch, with one or two Asian touches mixed in here as well. There were also seasonal special cards – like the asparagus card this spring. And admittedly that got me a little ?Klinsch?. As fine as the “spaghetti monk’s beard” sounds – you just can’t say no to Rheintaler asparagus, can you? Either way ? I give two thumbs up for both the menu and the casual ambience.

On the Witzweg from Heiden to Walzenhausen

On the third day the weather is still mixed, but at least it’s not supposed to rain anymore. Today we’re going from Rorschach to the cog railway pagans up into the hills of the Appenzellerland. Various hikes can be undertaken from Heiden. For example, we have already described the tour along the Appenzellerland culture trail to the Gasthaus zum Gupf here on the blog. Today we are drawn in the opposite direction, namely we follow the “Witzweg” via Wolfhalden to Walzenhausen.

With a length of 8 kilometers and a scenic route including beautiful panoramic views over Lake Constance to the Pfänder, the themed trail is the perfect distance for a leisurely Sunday hike. The approximately 40 joke stations contribute to the entertainment, but in my opinion they are not the main reason for the hike (or maybe I just don’t understand the Appenzell humor).

From Walzenhausen you can take a cog railway down to the valley Rheineck. And if the water level is high enough, then the last stage from Rheineck back to Rorschach can be done with a Boat trip through the nature reserve of the Old Rhine combine. Alternatively, you can take the S-Bahn like we did. At the beginning of May, the water level usually does not allow shipping.

Key data of the hike Heiden – Walzenhausen

starting point Heiden train station (790 m above sea level)
reachability accessible by public transport
Long 7,7 Kilometer
elevation gain ? 256 m ? 374 m
duration 2:15 h
destination Walzenhausen (Bahn) (670 m above sea level)
meals Klus fireplace (picnic) ? unfortunately there are currently no pubs along the way

Blue Dolphin Hotel in Metamorfosi

MetamorfosiDer kleine Ort liegt rund 1,5 km vom Hotel entfernt.

Klingt ziemlich gut!

Sithonia: Jeep Safari beim Gebirgszug Itamos

Start in Nikiti

Jahrhundert.

After a forced break of three years, we went back to Scotland in April 2022. The occasion was the review of all tours for the second edition of our travel guide “Scotland with children?*. So we mainly visited places that we already knew. This way we had a good opportunity to compare Scotland before and after Corona and Brexit.

So that they don’t get lost in my overly long travel report, I have the topics entry requirements, Corona measures in practice and supply situation released.

First of all: I am writing here as a travel blogger, author of one travel guideir?t=fami4aufdemwe 21&l=am2&o=3&a=3944378202* and from the current experience as a traveller. I did some research and thanks to repeated short stays I know Scotland quite well. But I’m not a proven expert on British or Scottish politics. I am reporting my personal impressions. These are all snapshots from our research trip to Scotland in April 2022.

Our findings in a nutshell

I wrote a very detailed report of our trip here: Scotland during the Easter holidays.

scotland on easter holidays, april, with children

Above all, it was a very nice trip with very good weather?

Scotland after Brexit: Entry in 2022

Since this year, Brexit has taken full effect. Entry into Great Britain is now only possible with a valid passport. Each family member needs their own photo ID. The ID card is no longer sufficient. However, a visa is not required for regular holiday trips.

In practice, not much has changed. Since Great Britain was never a member of the Schengen Agreement, there were always passport controls. We had the impression that it was taking longer. Maybe that’s just because every passport has to be opened and scanned. But I think the questions about the purpose of the stay are also new. When leaving the country we had to open the trunk. ? But we have had this experience before when entering and leaving Great Britain. We found the staff to be extremely friendly.

scotland ferry passports

If you want to go to the UK, you now need passports.

So: get passports for everyone in good time and plan enough time at the border!

Corona measures in Scotland summer 2022

Since April 18, 2022, no corona measures have been in force in Scotland. Since February, all requirements for crossing the border have been eliminated. No obligation to test, certainly not an obligation to vaccinate. For a while, wearing masks in Scotland (unlike England) was still mandatory in retail outlets. But that too is over now.

We were traveling across this crossing in Scotland. After the 18th, we still saw notices in many shops asking for masks to be worn voluntarily. In the supermarket, maybe half were still wearing a face covering ? at most. (In general, there were hardly any FFP2 masks to be seen, but mostly colorful fabric masks or scarves.)

2022 scotland masks corona

Notice in the Campbeltown cinema. (The staff weren’t wearing masks, by the way.)

The numbers still certify Scotland many Covid diseases. (Public Health Scotland has updated daily figures here out.) As a tourist, you hardly come into contact with the Corona situation. There are no public test centers around every corner (at least we didn’t see any). Nobody checks the vaccination status. 2G, 3G ? none of that exists in Scotland. Whether you get Covid or not has become a private matter.

Interestingly, even professed cautious people in Scotland are much more concerned about distancing and disinfecting hands and surfaces than wearing masks. The fact that aerosol can spread over two meters in closed rooms and cause infections does not seem to have gotten around yet.

In addition, in conversations with Scots, we have repeatedly come across the conviction that the pandemic is being managed much better and measures are being implemented so much more efficiently than the English. (To what extent this is true, we could not compare.)

The situation in Scotland: Our impressions

I always find the general mood in Scotland exciting. Of course, it’s not easy to assess those on a two-week vacation. Especially not if you spend most of your time outside in the beautiful nature. I will therefore only record a few observations and try to refrain from half-baked attempts at interpretation.

Provides a general assessment now post local elections across the UK this short BBC report. (For a comprehensive picture you would of course have to look at different media from different camps. The state broadcaster naturally looks at the matter more unionistly and from the direction of England.)

2022 newspapers scotland

The Yellow Press was more concerned with details during our trip. The fact that the Scottish Prime Minister herself no longer wore a mask was the ultimate excitement.

Brexit and independence

When we were last in Scotland in 2018, I got the impression that the excitement about Brexit had already subsided compared to 2017. In 2022 we have hardly encountered the topic as such. (However, we also had fewer encounters with people overall. So it’s quite possible that it was solely because of that.)

I have the impression that most people have come to terms with it. Of course, some are also waiting for the next referendum. ? Okay, actually, coming to think of it, everyone we’ve broached the subject with (well, three out of three) seems to assume that Scotland will secede from Britain sooner or later.

Schottland SNP Arran

A number of houses on Arran, for example, were decorated with SNP logos.

I’ve only seen Union Jacks on official landmarks and on two individual houses in Ardrossan. However, that was also the case in 2018. In any case, there is no sign of an acute mood of rebellion. (But you would probably have to do more research in the metropolitan areas.)

Ukraine and War

My impression is that the Ukraine war is having less of an impact on the general mood in Scotland than in Germany. By that I don’t mean the solidarity of the people ? it’s enormous. In many places we saw Ukrainian flags. The war also seems to be further away emotionally for the Scots than in Germany.

For example, there is no awareness of saving gas and no panic buying. Flour and oil are available in sufficient quantities and are not rationed. (We did a bit of countermeasures. After my mother wrote to me that she couldn’t find a scrap of wheat flour at home in three different supermarkets, we exported eight kilos of British flour.)

Scotland Wheat Flour

Wheat flour is available in Scotland and goes into our luggage.

supply situation in Scotland

So self-catering holidays ? or at all ? will not be a problem in Scotland in 2022 either. In my opinion, however, the fruit and vegetable departments of the supermarkets were less well stocked. That in turn is probably due to Brexit. (If I understand that correctly, customs clearance is not yet working well. Since the trucks stand for a long time due to a lack of personnel and processes that have not yet been established, fresh goods rot on the way or have been canceled until further notice.)

supermarket scotland vegetables

On a Tuesday afternoon, the fruit and vegetable department at an Aldi’s on the west coast of Scotland looks a bit grim. Expensive airborne goods are more likely to be available. Imports from southern EU neighboring countries, such as Dutch greenhouses, are probably problematic.

Overall, however, the supply situation in Scotland is currently very good. Compared to Germany, we even experienced them as better in April 2022. ? Because basic foods such as flour, oil and rice are available in sufficient quantities.

toast bread scotland supermarket

Same shop, same day, ?bread? department.

Refueling was no problem at all in Scotland. The prices for diesel were even slightly cheaper than in Germany at the same time. The headlines about supply bottlenecks are yesterday’s news.

There are many more tips for traveling to Scotland (with children) here in the family4travel blog. Monday evening 9 May, the permanent agricultural spokespersons in the House of Representatives showed themselves in a round table discussion to catch up on food security in the world and how the Netherlands can contribute to this. One of the most important comments came from the German Marion Jansen, Director of Trade and Agriculture at the OECD. “Let’s stop saying that Ukraine and Russia account for almost 30% of world wheat trade.” That is true, but Ukraine makes with its 33 million tons of wheat only a fraction (less than 4%) of world production. The Russians like to sell their grain in rubles and at top prices and they even expect a large harvest.

Cookie makers, pasta makers and bread makers are chasing the scarce flour that is not as scarce as they think

China and EU are by far the largest wheat producers

With her words, Jansen expressed a realism that is hard to find in the media and politics. To demonstrate this, we, in collaboration with arable and agricultural raw materials journalist Lourens Gengler, proposed USDA-data a table of figures (see below) showing the most relevant factors in their relationship. This shows that the EU and China equally to be world champions in grain production. The EU appears to be far ahead of the US as an exporter of wheat to the world market (which makes up only a quarter of total production) and is almost as big as Russia as a major power in the global wheat market.

The major buyers on the world market – because they do not grow enough wheat themselves – are North Africa, the Middle East and China, as well as Nigeria and Bangladesh. There hunger and then revolt can strike if millions of people can no longer afford their bread or other grain products. In a number of African countries, in particular Egypt and Yemen, and Bangladesh, this situation is actually building up.

That certainly applies now that India – just like Argentina – exports wheat cease? India ranks third in global wheat production – after the EU and China and well ahead of Russia – and has the potential to improve yields on its vast acreage. The vast country is world champion in wheat acreage, but – just like Australia – gets less grain from it than it could if more optimal production processes could be applied. In dry Australia – just like India – the production per hectare has been improving for years thanks to improved techniques.

The (de facto small) production of Ukraine can therefore be absorbed in the world if we are technically willing and able to organize it. The big obstacles are including in transport. Due to Covid and the still strict policy of President Xi in China, that became 10 times more expensive than before. Who can do that by, for example, appointing a Food Commissioner (like I recently suggested), would like to organize better can prevent a lot of harm.

For the coming years, the world should now organize itself. For now, only the US does that

Contradictory EU policies

Last week, US President Joe Biden announced that he wanted to make more fertilizer than the market would on its own to produce more grain for the world market. In the EU, on the other hand, we are going to cut back on production in order to make it greener and because we think we have little business in the world market, while we are by far the most important player on the world market together with Russia for the basic product wheat.

The EU apparently chooses differently in the field of food than in the field of energy; EU Vice-President and Leader of the Green Deal is ready to cut and burn more trees to end our dependence on Russian oil and gas. That’s a bad idea ecologically, but geopolitically it’s justifiable. Those who respect the contradictory ideological leaps of European politicians should be able to observe coolly that the potential to keep Africa out of the turmoil lies in India, the US, Australia and Argentina. There, the yields of enormously expansive fields can be increased. A Food Commissioner could sort it out, bring prices down and save many millions from hunger.

Meanwhile, panic reigns and thus high prices. Cookie bakers, pasta makers and bread bakers are chasing the scarce flour that is not as scarce as they think. This psychological effect causes high prices in the short term that lead to hunger and revolt. For the coming years, the world should now organize itself. For now, only the US is doing that.

We would love to say thanks to the author of this short article for this incredible material
